Visits to Surrey Street Market are one of my most vivid memories as a child visiting Croydon and exploring my family’s history and connection to the area. It was a part of Croydon that never changed, a source of comfort in an ever-changing, busy borough. The colourful tents, rich culture and the sense of community surrounding me. The chaos of the customers, loud street vendors, and the bells of the trams all contributed to my delight, visiting this staple of central Croydon. I wanted to capture this nostalgia and joy through extravagant colours and represent the joy that the market still brings me to this day.
